Why is Talon a Good Choice for Automated Inspection?
Incredible Power Density
Talon can be configured to accept the entire range of light guides (fiber, liquid, etc.). When Talon delivers power density at the input of these light guides of 200 mw / square mm and above – laser like levels from a broadband source!
Narrow Spectrum / Multiple Monochromatic Sources in Single Illuminator
Talon combines energy from multiple sources and can be configured for exacting spectral applications. Talon can be configured to excite multiple narrow band fluorophores.
Flicker-Free
No image should be spoiled by random or non-random fluctuations coming from the illumination system. During development careful attention was given to the electrical filtering circuitry to ensure world-class flicker-free operation.
Extreme High-Speed Strobing (100KHz+)
Need to strobe? Strobing times of 100Khz are possible even at high power levels.
Maximum Power! (Flux)
Talon is capable of delivering intense levels of optical power. Over 30 optical watts at the light guide input even when configured for low numerical aperture applications (solid angle).
Solid Angle (Numerical Aperture)
In many applications it is critical for light sources to contain their energy within a prescribed solid angle (to avoid stray light, to focus on a specific region, etc.). Talon has a configurable system that is capable of wide range of solid angles.
Linear Calibration
Talon is easily calibrated using automated software to deliver unique dimming response curves – can easily establish the min and max irradiance and the response curve between the two including a linear relationship between dimming level and irradiance.
Why is Talon a Good Choice for BioFluorescence?
Blazingly Fast Fan Ramp Up / Ramp Down Times
Even when operated at full power rise times are just over 2 microseconds (2000 nanoseconds). Fall times are a blazing 125 nanoseconds. For more typical power levels, the speeds are even faster!

TALON AT A GLANCE
Modern Electronics & Firmware
Automotive Grade Electronic Components
Where available, Talon is fitted with automotive grade electronic components. In addition, Talon leverages the recent explosion of high current DC:DC components being brought to market to simplify and ruggedize the circuitry.
Intentionally De-Rated Circuitry
Talon‘s brain is a proprietary multi-channel high current driver capable of operating at operating at 1,000+ watt per channel power levels well above what the vast majority of applications require. For typical applications this means the components are operating well below their limits, thereby promising long life spans.
Full Internal Monitoring
Talon‘s internal microcontroller continuously self-monitors and responds to a wide range of internal parameter thereby avoiding any damage should the Talon encounter such conditions as a blocked fan.
Cool!
The latest in cooling innovations were incorporated into Talon to ensure that temperatures remain low so as to extend the product‘s lifespan. Cooper core heatsinks, active cooling, active temperature monitoring and the like all add to the robustness of the thermal design. Even under demanding operating conditions Talon‘s electronics barely register a significant increase in temperature.
Precision Optics
Proven Light Engine Design
Ever since RCA engineers first mapped out methods of combining colors 70 years ago using dichroic filters, the methods have been slowly refined. Talon uses established methods of combining light that are in use in other applications by the millions. These well-established techniques further establish Talon‘s longevity. Materials, such as advanced polyimides, are used to further manage the thermal performance of Talon.
Precision Parts
The heart of each Talon (its light engine) starts on a precision 5 axis mill enabling control over dimensions at a level far beyond what is required.
Narrow Angle
Many applications benefit from illumination sources with low beam divergence. Talon optics can be configured for very low beam angles.
Kohler
Kohler illumination techniques are used to ensure that the light guides receive uniform illumination devoid of artifacts.

Saber Graphical User Interface
Set Limits
Talon is highly configurable and provides for the power range and temperature range limits to be established using a simple graphical interface.
Enable Features
Talon is user friendly and can be set up with a wide range of options. For example, need to ensure the light cannot come on without a light guide? Then enable that feature.
Establish Dimming Curves
Calibration and recalibration is simple using Talon‘s XXX GUI designed to automate the calibration process. Calibration and recalibration is simple using Talon‘s XXX GUI designed to automate the calibration process.
Watch Output
A pop-up window provides a quick look at the key parameters – including the electrical current going to each channel and the temperature associated with each channel.
Store Raw Data in Cloud
Data on the device is stored securely in the cloud so modifying Talon‘s configuration (limits, response curves, etc) can occur at any time without the need to collect any raw data associated with Talon‘s irradiance.
Flight Control
LandingPad
Talon‘s unique LandingPad (Flight Control?) module enables full manual control (no computer required for full operation).
Precise Control
LED Efficacy
Light Emitting Diodes require increasing amount of electrical current to generate equal increases in irradiance. This relationship between electrical current and irradiance is fully described by a quadratic (2nd order) polynomial function.
Linear Coefficients
The relationship between electrical current and irradiance is measured and stored to the cloud during manufacturing. With this information a set of values (linear coefficients) can be determined and loaded into Talon at any time. These values set the upper and lower limits for the irradiance and the slope of the curve across the range. This simple system ensure that, for each channel, an X% shift in the commanded dimming will result in a corresponding X% shift in the irradiance.
Resolution
Talon has ~ 3500 unique dimming steps between the limits established during calibration providing exceptionally fine radiometric control.
Be In Control
Saber Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Talon‘s Window‘s-based Saber GUI allows access to the entire range of configuration variables (range, dimming response, temperature limits, blocked fan controls, light guide port sensor, etc.).
