Test Set-Up

Equipment used:

PAXit! Image Measurement and Analysis Software, using the low-light PAXcam5 + (5MP CCD)
Huvitz HSZ-745TR CMO research stereo microscope, 8x – 56x zoom
TechniQuip Truflux Near-Vertical illuminator

View the bottom of .38 cal cartridge using the CMO stereo microscope and TruFlux llluminator

As can be seen it is not a simple task to image inside this cartridge.

Blind hole at the bottom of the .38 cal cartridge can be illuminated!

Result

The TruFlux image clearly shows surface topography and more details on the surface of the cavity, and it appears to do a better job filling the back focal plane of the objective lens with light, as the depth of field and image quality sure show an improvement!

Results

Two notable improvements here using TruFlux:

TruFlux illumination clearly highlights the bottom of every porous cell in the ceramic material (lower layer on right-side image), which offers significant contrast improvement, should quantifiable image analysis is to be applied in this area
The dielectric layers on the chip capacitor can be easily seen (small rectangle on top/right) using TruFlux.

Conclusions

The Techniquip TruFlux Near-Vertical illuminator addresses a legacy illumination technique that still has merit for modern applications, both optical and digital.
TruFlux can be used with both Greenough and CMO ‘Common Main Objective’ stereo microscopes.
For research, failure analysis, and M&P (Material and Process Labs), the ability to throw a wide range of lighting solutions at the subject is the difference between ‘win and lose’ on challenging materials and samples. TRUFLUX is an important part of this arsenal.
